A Message from the Principal - Term 2, 2026

A Message from the Principal - Term 2, 2026

As we reach the close of this term, it is worth pausing, genuinely pausing, to look back at just how much our community has lived, celebrated and grown together over the past nine weeks. Terms like this one don't happen by accident. They are the result of students who show up with purpose, staff who give more than is asked of them, and families who back their children and this College with extraordinary generosity. This term has been a vivid expression of who John Paul College is.

We began with ANZAC Day, our Marching Band marching with quiet pride through the streets of Springwood, a powerful reminder that service and remembrance are not abstract values here, but ones we live out in the community. There is something deeply moving about watching young people choose to give up their morning to honour those who gave everything. It set the right tone for the weeks that followed.

From there, the term moved quickly to the Mother's Day Breakfast and Primary Stall where the events brought warmth and joy to our families, before Mayfair arrived as the centrepiece of the community calendar. That afternoon, with its Performing Arts ensembles on stage, stalls filled with energy and laughter, the return of alumni for a reunion, and an army of volunteers who made it all possible, was John Paul College at its very best. Mayfair is more than a fundraiser. It is a declaration of community, and this year it shone.

Spirit Week gave our Year 12 students a timely and honest glimpse of life beyond school, with past graduates returning to share their journeys across trades, university, business and beyond. These conversations between generations matter deeply. They remind our senior students that the values formed in these corridors – integrity, courage, compassion – are the ones that carry furthest in the real world. Hearing that from people who have lived it is worth more than any textbook.

Mid-term brought National Boarding Week under the theme Echoes of Home , a celebration of the remarkable diversity of backgrounds, cultures and stories our boarding students carry with them every day. Home doesn't disappear when a student arrives at school; it travels with them. This week was our opportunity to honour that, and to recognise the boarding staff who work tirelessly to ensure every student feels they truly belong.

National Volunteers Week followed, giving us the chance to pause and genuinely thank the many parents and community members whose quiet, generous service sustains so much of what we do, from cold Saturday mornings on the sideline to the canteen to the classroom. You are the unseen engine of this community, and we do not take you for granted.

We closed the term as we should: All In . National Reconciliation Week called our whole community to step off the sidelines, through a Reconciliation Breakfast, a deeply symbolic tree planting ceremony led by our newest Indigenous students, and a whole-College Assembly where our Yalari Captain addressed the community with words of courage and aspiration that stayed with everyone in the room. Our TAS Indigenous Round brought it home, honouring our First Nations community in sport as in life, with a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony and the national anthem sung in Yugambeh.

Nine weeks. One extraordinary community. Thank you, JPC, for everything you brought to this term.

Kind regards ,

Mr Craig Merritt

Principal

Rock Fest Strikes a Chord at John Paul College

Rock Fest Strikes a Chord at John Paul College

The Coleman Centre came alive with the sound of live music on Saturday evening as John Paul College hosted its annual Rock Fest, bringing together talented young musicians from across South East Queensland for an unforgettable celebration of contemporary music.

The non-competitive event showcased the energy, creativity and musicianship of some of Brisbane’s leading high school rock bands, with performances from John Paul College’s own Exit 24 alongside visiting bands from Sheldon College, St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace, Canterbury College and Clairvaux MacKillop College.

From the first guitar riff to the final encore, the audience was treated to an impressive variety of performances spanning classic rock anthems, contemporary hits and original arrangements. The atmosphere in the Coleman Centre was electric as students took to the stage with confidence, demonstrating not only their musical talent but also the dedication and teamwork required to perform at such a high standard.

Rock Fest continues to be a highlight of the School of Performing Arts calendar, providing young musicians with the opportunity to perform in a professional concert environment while connecting with peers from other schools who share a passion for live music.

The evening also highlighted the strong sense of community that exists within the performing arts, with students supporting and encouraging one another throughout the event. Audience members responded enthusiastically, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere that celebrated the achievements of every performer.

John Paul College extends its sincere thanks to the participating schools, staff, student performers, technicians and volunteers whose efforts made the event possible. Special thanks also go to the families and friends who attended and supported the students throughout the evening.

Rock Fest once again demonstrated the power of music to bring people together, leaving audiences inspired and already looking forward to next year’s event.

JPC recently took part in an exciting and historic musical event, helping establish a record for Australia’s largest school‑aged Concert Band. Almost 100 JPC students from our Wind Orchestra and Symphonic Band joined musicians from 15 other schools across Queensland at QSAC to come together for a truly spectacular experience. It was a memorable day of music, collaboration and once‑in‑a‑lifetime connection.

TAS Indigenous Round

TAS Indigenous Round

This trimester’s TAS Indigenous Round was a powerful reminder of who we are as a community at John Paul College, and who we aspire to be.

Gathering to honour the theme of National Reconciliation Week, All In , was not simply a ceremony; it was a commitment. A commitment to truth, to respect and to the ongoing work of reconciliation that belongs to every one of us.

We are proud to celebrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, staff and families who enrich our College community each and every day. Their cultures, histories and perspectives make us stronger.

My sincere thanks go to Tribal Experiences for the profound gift of the Welcome to Country, the didgeridoo performance and the smoking ceremony. Moments like these remind us that reconciliation is lived, not merely spoken.

Let us carry Saturday’s spirit forward — not just in sport, but in everything we do.

Celebrating National Boarding Week 2026

Celebrating National Boarding Week 2026

National Boarding Week 2026 was a celebration of everything that makes life in our boarding community special.

From sharing family recipes – chocolate slice, okonomiyaki and Taiwanese mung bean soup – to volunteering at Ronald McDonald House, marking Boarders' Day with a giant cake and cheering on the Boarding Band, the week was full of culture, connection and fun. Our senior boarders also represented JPC at the Boarding Leaders Forum at Ipswich Girls Grammar, joining student leaders from schools across Australia.

It was a wonderful reminder of what boarding life at JPC really looks like – a genuine home away from home, rich with friendship, diversity and belonging.

Barefoot in the Park

JPC’s annual Barefoot in the Park recognised 70 years of Under Eights Week in Queensland, highlighting the importance of early childhood education. The event provided hands-on learning experiences through arts, crafts, music and interactive activities that support creativity, social skills and curiosity.

Children engaged with a range of experiences, including farm animals, encouraging exploration and connection with the world around them. It was a valuable opportunity to reinforce the role of play-based learning in the early years and to connect families with the JPC learning community.

Entrepreneurship Comes to Life for Year 5

Entrepreneurship Comes to Life for Year 5

Market Day saw our Year 5 students put their entrepreneurial skills to the test in a vibrant celebration of creativity, innovation and social entrepreneurship.

The journey began much earlier in the term when BOP Industries came to campus to deliver an immersive Ideas Incubator workshop. Across a series of hands-on challenges, students explored rapid ideation, creative thinking and the foundations of business development – building confidence as young entrepreneurs while learning what it takes to turn an idea into something real.

A highlight of the workshop was welcoming back JPC alumnus and past Stanley Sclavos Cup winner, Gabriel Mira (Class of 2020), who now works with BOP Industries. Returning to his old Year 5 classrooms, Gabriel reflected on how the creativity, collaboration and problem solving he developed at JPC helped shape his own journey, inspiring our students to think boldly and back themselves.

These experiences proved the perfect foundation for what was to come on Market Day. As part of their Unit of Inquiry, students developed products for a target audience, created websites, persuasive pitches and print advertisements – putting their English and Technology skills to the test in a real-world setting.

The results spoke for themselves, with the cohort collectively raising over $15,000, to be donated to each stall's chosen charity. A heartfelt thank you to all students, teachers and families who made the day such a success!

Carrying the Spirit Forward: ANZAC Day at JPC

Our community came together to honour the courage, sacrifice and spirit of our servicemen and women, past and present. It was a time for remembrance, gratitude and reflection, as we paid tribute to those who served and ensured their legacy lives on.

We were honoured to welcome back one of our own, JPC alumnus and former Royal Australian Air Force Mission Commander, Mr James Middleton (Class of 2004). He spoke about mateship as a cornerstone of the ANZAC spirit, challenging our students to carry that spirit forward in their everyday lives.

Lest we forget.

Led by our Year 6 Student Council alongside parent volunteers, it was a wonderful opportunity for students to share cultural activities, connect with peers who speak the same languages at home, and celebrate the rich diversity of our community - through singing, writing Arabic letters and making Vietnamese dolls dressed in traditional Áo Dài. A timely celebration following the recent Eid al-Adha holiday.

A Sea of Orange for Zidan at the Brisbane Marathon Festival

A Sea of Orange for Zidan at the Brisbane Marathon Festival

On Sunday 7 June, families from Kindy E and across the John Paul College community came together to participate in the Brisbane Marathon Festival to raise funds for the Leukemia Foundation in support of one of our students, Zidan.

While Kindy E families made up most participants and supporters, it was wonderful to see families from other kindy groups join in the event, demonstrating the strength and unity of our community. Throughout the day, JPC families ran, walked, spectated and cheered from the sidelines, creating a sea of orange and an atmosphere filled with encouragement, hope, and kindness.

One of the most special aspects of the day was the opportunity to include Zidan in the celebrations. Through video calls at various points throughout the event, he was able to share in the excitement, watching his kindy friends cross the finish line and seeing his teachers and friends proudly dressed in orange, holding signs created especially for him. His smile and excitement were a reminder of just how much the day meant to him and his family.

The Brisbane Marathon Festival was more than a community even, it was a powerful demonstration of what it means to be part of the JPC family. It showcased the compassion, generosity, and unwavering support that surround Zidan as he continues his journey.

Thank you to every family member, participant, supporter and donor who contributed to this special day. Your generosity and encouragement are making a meaningful difference. Most importantly, you have shown Zidan that he is surrounded by a community that cares deeply for him and that he does not walk this journey alone.

Community Care Students Raise Over $500 for Share the Dignity

Community Care Students Raise Over $500 for Share the Dignity

The John Paul College Community Care students have demonstrated outstanding compassion, teamwork, and service through their recent Mayfair fundraising stall in support of Share the Dignity .

Thanks to the incredible efforts of students across the afternoon, the initiative exceeded its fundraising goal, raising more than $500.00 for the charity. The achievement reflects the generosity, enthusiasm, and dedication of all students involved.

Students contributed in many ways, from bracelet making and sign creation to donating chocolates, promoting the stall, assisting with setup and pack-up, running the Wheel of Fortune, and volunteering their time throughout the event. Every contribution played an important role in creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere that encouraged the College community to support the cause.

A special acknowledgment goes to the students who took on key responsibilities throughout the afternoon, including those involved in setup and pack-up, bracelet making, the Wheel of Fortune, and entertaining the crowd as “Eddie the Eagle.” Their leadership and willingness to serve helped ensure the success of the stall.

Special thanks are also extended to Sarah Pham for her guidance, organisation, and commitment throughout the planning and coordination of the initiative.

The Community Care leadership team expressed their gratitude to all students involved, noting how proud they were of the teamwork and positive impact achieved through the fundraiser.

This initiative is a wonderful example of the John Paul College spirit in action, students coming together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

A powerful and perspective-shaping experience that brought the true meaning of compassion to life. Thank you to our school community for your generosity. We are grateful to our JPC families for their ongoing support.

Helping Turn Ambition into Opportunity

Helping Turn Ambition into Opportunity

John Paul College proudly celebrate the Luna Family for their generous support of the John Paul College Football Program through the Australian Sports Foundation.

As passionate members of our community and parents of footballing sons at JPC, the Luna Family recognised the opportunity to help build something truly special for current and future students. Their support has played an important role in transforming an ambitious vision into reality, including backing the College's groundbreaking direct partnership with the Spanish football club RCD Espanyol de Barcelona.

"We supported the JPC Football Program because it felt like there was a real opportunity to build something strong and genuinely different at JPC. For a Brisbane school to create a direct international connection and pathway with RCD Espanyol felt genuinely exciting, and it was the sort of thing worth backing," says Mr Clint Luna.

The Luna Family believes that sport plays a vital role in creating a balanced educational experience, helping young people develop resilience, teamwork, confidence and a strong sense of belonging.

Their contribution will help strengthen coaching, development opportunities and pathways for aspiring footballers, while laying foundations that will benefit generations of JPC students to come.

"For me, giving back means helping build something worthwhile rather than standing back and expecting others to do it. If you value a community and can help improve it, that feels like a much better mindset than always looking elsewhere for the next best option," explains Mr Luna.

On behalf of the John Paul College community, we extend our sincere gratitude to the Luna Family for their generosity, vision and commitment to helping shape the future of football at JPC. Their support is creating meaningful opportunities for our students today while helping establish a lasting legacy for future players.

Thank you, Luna Family, for igniting ambition and creating innovation through purpose.

From the Archives - 45 Years, Countless Memories

From the Archives - 45 Years, Countless Memories

As John Paul College celebrates its 45th year of operation in 2026, we pause to reflect on the remarkable achievements, defining moments and shared experiences that have shaped our community across generations.

This year’s milestone celebrations provide an opportunity to revisit significant anniversaries from throughout our history. Forty years ago, in 1986, the final group of Foundation students graduated, marking the end of the pioneering era that helped establish the College’s culture, traditions and spirit. The same year also saw the successful staging of the musical Sheik, Rattle ’n Roll and the continued expansion of the campus through the completion of major building developments.

1986 Musical Sheik

In 1991, John Paul College welcomed Governor-General Bill Hayden for the official opening of the Elementary School, recognising the College’s rapid growth and national standing. That year also featured the opening of the Dame Joan Sutherland Music Centre, the international New Zealand and Fiji sporting tour, and the vibrant Logana Carnival, an event that laid the foundations for today’s beloved Mayfair.

The opening of the Child Care Centre in 1996 strengthened the College’s vision of providing a seamless educational journey from the earliest years through to graduation. Five years later, students from Class 4B achieved national recognition by winning the Westpac Real Ideas Competition for their community service project, earning a trip to the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.

Community spirit was on full display in 2006 when students raised almost $100,000 through the Walkathon campaign to support the construction of the Aquatic Centre. In 2011, significant campus developments, including the Kindergarten, Primary ARC, Stephen Bean Theatre and The Piazza, enhanced learning and community life, while the spectacular One Night Only gala showcased the extraordinary talent of students across the Performing Arts.

The years that followed brought continued excellence and innovation. In 2016, alumna Dami Im returned to campus following her Eurovision success, while students captivated audiences with The Wiz . More recently, 2021 saw the College recognised as APATA Performing Arts School of the Year, the triumphant return of Mayfair, the acclaimed production of Chicago , and celebrations honouring founding visionary Rev Bryan Gilmour’s 90th birthday.

Together, these milestones tell the story of a community united by ambition, creativity, faith and an enduring commitment to excellence.
