A Message from the Principal - Term 1, 2026
A Message from the Principal - Term 1, 2026
As Term 1 draws to a close, I have been reflecting on the many ways our students and staff have truly demonstrated what it means to Ignite Ambition. Over the past ten weeks, our classrooms, playgrounds and community spaces have been filled with curiosity, courage and a genuine desire to grow. Whether through academic endeavour, creative expression, on the sporting field, in service, or in small daily acts of kindness, our students continue to show what is possible when ambition is guided by purpose.
It has been a vibrant and purposeful start to the 2026 school year. We have welcomed new students and families into our community, while our returning students have quickly re-engaged in both learning and co-curricular life. Across the College, there is a strong sense of momentum, underpinned by a culture of belonging and wellbeing that ensures every student is known, supported and encouraged to flourish.
A significant highlight of the term has been the continued progress of our , first shared with families last year. These capital works represent our Ignite Ambition Strategic Plan in action, translating vision into reality through purposeful investment in learning environments, wellbeing, and future-focused infrastructure.

Throughout the holiday period and into Term 1, our campus has been transformed. In the Primary School, the refurbished Year 3 classrooms in the Ray Richards Building now provide vibrant, contemporary learning spaces, while revitalised OSHC facilities offer a welcoming environment for students and families.
In the Secondary School, the Bradley Building has been reimagined as a modern, flexible learning hub, complemented by improved pathways, upgraded seating, and new furnishings across the campus. The Rocks precinct is also evolving into an enhanced social space to support student connection and wellbeing.
Our co-curricular and community facilities have also seen significant upgrades. The Stephen Bean Theatre has been refreshed, while the Cec Munns Sports Centre now features improved parking, upgraded changerooms and enhanced clubhouse facilities. Additional improvements across our sporting precincts, including resurfaced courts and improved access at Jukambi, further strengthen student experience, safety and accessibility.
Students are also benefiting from the expanded Piazza Canteen, designed to improve efficiency and flow, as well as upgraded amenities that enhance comfort across campus.

Looking ahead, construction of the Burragunn Building continues to progress well, with key milestones achieved and the project on track for completion in Term 1, 2027.
The lead-up to Easter offers a meaningful opportunity to pause and reflect on the deeper message of the season. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Easter reminds us of hope, renewal and the promise of new beginnings. It encourages us to look forward with optimism, embrace challenges with resilience, and support one another with compassion—values that sit at the heart of our mission to ignite excellence in all.
As we enter the holiday break, I hope our students, staff and families find time to rest, reconnect and recharge. I extend my sincere thanks to our dedicated staff for their commitment and energy, and to our families for your ongoing partnership and support.
May this Easter season bring peace, renewal and a strengthened sense of purpose to our community. We look forward to welcoming students back for what promises to be an exciting and enriching Term 2.
Kind regards ,
Mr Craig Merritt
Principal

Foundation Day: Honouring Our Story and Shaping Our Future
Foundation Day: Honouring Our Story and Shaping Our Future
This year, John Paul College proudly celebrates its 44th Foundation Day, a meaningful occasion to acknowledge the founding families, clergy and early educators who established our pillars of Unity | Christ | Learning. We were delighted to welcome back members of our original community, whose vision and commitment formed the foundation of Queensland’s first independent Christian ecumenical school.
A special highlight of this year’s service was a new tradition introduced for our Year 7 students. To mark the beginning of their secondary journey, they symbolically retraced the footsteps of the first 144 students who gathered at The Rocks in 1982. Their procession honoured the College’s beginnings while looking ahead to their future as the Class of 2031.

The service also recognised our long‑serving staff, with plaques presented in appreciation of their dedication and significant contributions to College life.
Foundation Day remains a powerful reminder of our shared story, our enduring values and the bright future ahead for John Paul College.

Appointment of Head of Performing Arts
Appointment of Head of Performing Arts
John Paul College is delighted to announce the appointment of Alumnus Mrs Leonie Herbohn (1990) as Head of Performing Arts (Co-Curricular) at John Paul College, commencing Term 2, 2026.
In this pivotal leadership role, Mrs Herbohn will provide overarching artistic direction and strategic leadership across our award-winning co-curricular Performing Arts programs — spanning Music, Dance, Theatre and Cheer from Prep to Year 12. She will lead and inspire a talented team of specialists, drive innovation and growth, and continue to build a vibrant, inclusive arts culture that makes the performing arts accessible to every student at JPC.

Mrs Herbohn's connection to John Paul College spans more than 30 years, first as a student, and now as a deeply respected member of our staff. Her leadership journey at the College has been broad and distinguished, encompassing roles as a classroom teacher, Head of Faculty (Humanities) for 15 years, Acting Dean of Studies and College Stage Manager for nearly two decades. This depth of experience, combined with strong stakeholder relationships, a collaborative approach, and an intimate understanding of our community, equips her exceptionally well to lead our Performing Arts program into its next chapter of excellence.
Since stepping into the Acting Head of Performing Arts role in October 2025, Mrs Herbohn has already demonstrated the vision and energy this role demands. Student participation across ensembles has grown, the Musical Theatre Preparation Program has been introduced, and the student-led Spirit Team made its debut at our inaugural Rally Round Assembly. Expanded beginner programs in guitar and piano reflect her commitment to accessibility and participation, while the upcoming Jazz on the Lawns event, developed in collaboration with renowned musician James Morrison, is a clear signal of the artistic ambition and community engagement she brings to the role.
The College warmly congratulates Mrs Herbohn on this well-deserved appointment and looks forward to the continued growth, creativity and excellence she will foster across our Performing Arts community.

Launch of Musical Theatre Program
Launch of Musical Theatre Program
Our Musical Theatre Preparation Program launched early in Term 1, providing students with focused training in singing, acting and movement, and building both confidence and refined performance technique in preparation for future productions. Throughout the program, students have embraced the opportunity to develop their stage presence, collaborate creatively and explore the discipline required to bring performances to life.

A particular highlight was the opportunity for participants to engage in an inspiring presentation and hands-on workshop delivered by the AMDA School of Performing Arts. This experience offered valuable industry insight, practical skill development and a glimpse into pathways beyond school, further igniting students’ passion for the performing arts and elevating their aspirations for future performances.

Performing Arts Showcase
Performing Arts Showcase
Our Term 1 Performing Arts Showcase, held in the Coleman Centre on Monday evening, was a vibrant celebration of talent, dedication and creative expression across our College community. Bringing together 14 ensembles and more than 200 performers, the event showcased the depth and diversity of our Performing Arts program.

Audiences were treated to an engaging and dynamic program featuring Dance, Bands, Contemporary Bands, Choir, Strings, Chamber groups and Piano Ensembles. Each performance reflected not only the technical skill of our students, but also their passion, teamwork and commitment developed throughout the term.
The evening was a testament to the power of collaboration, with students supporting one another on and off the stage, and staff guiding them to achieve their very best. From polished musical pieces to energetic dance performances, every item contributed to a memorable and uplifting experience.
It was wonderful to see such strong support from families and the wider College community, creating an atmosphere of encouragement and celebration. The Showcase highlighted the importance of the arts in nurturing confidence, creativity and connection, and we congratulate all performers on an outstanding evening.

A New Era for JPC Football: RCD Espanyol Elite Program Takes Flight
A New Era for JPC Football: RCD Espanyol Elite Program Takes Flight
In Term 1, John Paul College proudly commenced a landmark collaboration with Spanish football club RCD Espanyol de Barcelona (RCDE), launching Queensland’s first RCD Espanyol Elite Football Program. This milestone brought together one of Europe’s most respected youth academies with JPC’s longstanding culture of sporting and academic excellence, creating an elevated development pathway for young athletes.
Throughout the term, students from Years 4 to 12 trained within an elite football environment that offered:
✔ Official RCD Espanyol coaching methodology
✔ Specialist training and technical development
✔ Online player education
✔ Pathways into competitive football (Junior TAS, TAS, NPL, FQA)
✔ Future training and tournament opportunities in Barcelona.

Principal Mr Craig Merritt highlighted that the partnership flourished due to shared values. ‘JPC and RCD Espanyol both recognise that true high performance grows not only from technical skill, but from character, discipline, teamwork and resilience,’ he said. ‘RCDE’s global reputation for developing technically skilled, tactically intelligent and values‑driven players aligns strongly with our mission to ignite excellence in all.’

Longstanding RCDE ambassador Mr Jason Cowland emphasised what made this collaboration distinctly powerful: direct engagement with the club itself – without third-party intermediaries – and access to a FIFA-recognised development model. This ensured JPC coaches and players received authentic, world-class guidance from professionals competing in top-tier European football.
Importantly, the partnership was designed to strengthen, not replace, JPC’s football identity. RCDE is supporting the College in building its own methodology and long-term pathways, laying the foundations for a sustainable, high-performance football culture.
The College extends heartfelt thanks to the Luna family, whose generosity and vision made this breakthrough initiative possible.

In Term 2, another group of students from Brazil will be joining us, further strengthening our global connections and ongoing relationships with schools overseas.

Life in Fenton Village: A Vibrant Term of Connection and Growth
Life in Fenton Village: A Vibrant Term of Connection and Growth
As Term 1 draws to a close, our Boarding community reflects on a vibrant and rewarding start to the year. It has been a term defined by connection, growth and a strong sense of belonging, as new students were warmly welcomed and returning boarders quickly re-established friendships and routines.
Across the term, students have demonstrated resilience and independence, stepping outside their comfort zones and embracing opportunities both in and beyond the classroom. Life in Fenton Village continues to thrive, with shared meals, evening activities and everyday moments strengthening the close-knit community that makes boarding at JPC so special.

A highlight of the term was the Staff vs Students Esports Challenge, which brought the village together in a spirited and entertaining competition. In a closely contested battle, students claimed victory, though staff are already planning their comeback in Term 2.
Our Year 12 Formal was another standout event, celebrating a significant milestone with an evening of elegance, connection, and celebration.
Boarders also enjoyed an exciting Dreamworld adventure, made even better by the introduction of annual theme park passes for 2026. These experiences not only provide fun and relaxation but also strengthen friendships and create lasting memories beyond the classroom.

Balancing the Scales: Celebrating International Women’s Day 2026
Balancing the Scales: Celebrating International Women’s Day 2026
Each year on International Women’s Day, the JPC community joins a global movement to celebrate the achievements of women and reflect on the progress still needed to achieve gender equality. The 2026 United Nations theme, Balance the Scales , highlights the importance of addressing ongoing inequalities and promoting fairness, dignity, and opportunity for women and girls.
This message strongly aligns with our College values of Mutual Respect and Compassion, reminding us that inclusion and equity are not just ideas we speak about, but values we live out through our everyday actions. By fostering fairness, understanding, and kindness across our community, we help create an environment where everyone feels supported and empowered to thrive.

Our International Women’s Day Breakfast provided a meaningful opportunity to reflect on these themes and hear from two inspiring alumni who are making their mark in different industries.
Annabelle Efstathis (2011) is a Partner within the Property and Hospitality Team at Mullins Lawyers, where she advises on major hotel, resort and community venue projects across Australia. She has also been recognised as a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30 Real Estate category (2022–2023).
Zoe Greenup (née Efstathis) (2011) is the Head Designer at Sabo, leading the creative direction behind the brand’s globally recognised resort and event wear collections. Her work has been showcased at both New York Fashion Week and Sydney Fashion Week.
Annabelle reflected on the importance of balance beyond the workplace: “Have some fun and build your hobbies, you’ve got to still have passions outside of work. And when it comes to equality for women, even in the ten years I’ve been in the corporate world, it’s getting better, but there’s still so far to go.”
Zoe spoke about the power of self-belief and the influence of those who encourage us: “Keeping my options open and having that creative outlet through school really taught me to back myself, you’re going to make your own career. And I owe so much of that to my mum, who saw it in me first. She’s still my biggest inspiration today.”
Their stories sparked thoughtful conversation and served as a reminder that progress is shaped not only by awareness but by everyday actions that promote equity, respect and opportunity. Together, we continue to work towards a future where every young person can confidently pursue their path.

Lunar New Year at JPC: Celebrating Culture, Tradition and Community
Lunar New Year at JPC: Celebrating Culture, Tradition and Community
At JPC, we proudly celebrate the diversity of our community and the many cultural traditions that enrich our College. We are delighted to see such a strong turnout at our Lunar New Year celebration, where our JPC families welcomed the Year of the Horse together, honouring a special tradition, and embracing the qualities of strength, energy and new beginnings. The event was filled with joy, colour and a wonderful sense of community spirit. A special highlight was the spectacular lion dance performance by the International Wushu Academy, featuring one of our talented students.

Our celebrations extended beyond the main event, with JPC Homestay and Boarding students also coming together to mark Lunar New Year. Students enjoyed a traditional meal and desserts, shared time with peers and staff, and participated in a raffle for the chance to win a Lucky Red Envelope. Principal Mr Merritt addressed the students, offering an encouraging message for the year ahead. It was wonderful to see students from both Homestay and Boarding celebrating together and strengthening connections within our community.
Celebrations like these reflect the richness of our multicultural community and beautifully encompass our College motto, Unity | Christ | Learning. When we acknowledge the celebrations that matter to our families, we send a clear message that cultural identity is valued here. These moments help us build classrooms where curiosity replaces assumption, where every child has a story worth telling, and where students grow up knowing how to genuinely connect across difference. We wish all members of our community a joyful and prosperous Year of the Horse.

Faith in Unity: Celebrating Our Inaugural Eid Breakfast
Faith in Unity: Celebrating Our Inaugural Eid Breakfast
As a Christian Ecumenical College, JPC remains deeply committed to welcoming and embracing families of all faiths with love, understanding and respect. As part of our Faith in Unity program, we were honoured to gather with our community for our inaugural Eid Breakfast, marking the conclusion of Ramadan.

This meaningful occasion offered our community a special opportunity to appreciate the significance of this sacred time for our Muslim families. Coming together in a spirit of fellowship allowed us to share in their celebration and strengthen the sense of belonging that is central to our College ethos.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who attended and contributed to this meaningful occasion. Moments like these enrich our shared experience, deepen our connections, and reinforce our dedication to nurturing a community built on faith, respect and unity.

Chaplain Reflections: Praying Together as One Community
Chaplain Reflections: Praying Together as One Community
This year, we are pleased to introduce a new series of Chaplain Reflections Videos, offering our community a meaningful way to pause, reflect and pray together.
In 2026, John Paul College is following the World Council of Churches’ Ecumenical Prayer Cycle, praying for regions around the world throughout the year. Grounded in our Catholic, Anglican and Uniting Church traditions, these reflections place Christ at the centre and express our unity, compassion and hope for all people.
The prayers, drawn from Pilgrim Prayer: An Ecumenical Prayer Cycle , encourage us to grow together in faith while standing in solidarity with those facing challenge and uncertainty.

Last of the Foundation Students Graduate
Last of the Foundation Students Graduate
The graduating Class of 1986 brought to a close a significant chapter in John Paul College's history, becoming the last of the College's Foundation Students to complete their senior studies.
The cohort first enrolled in 1982 as Year 8 students, among the very first to walk through the College's doors. At the time, there were no established traditions, no senior students to look up to and no decades of history to draw upon. There was simply a group of young students stepping into something entirely new, and in doing so, they became the bedrock upon which the College was built.
Over the five years that followed, these students did far more than attend classes. They were present for the firsts, the inaugural school events, the early sporting contests and the budding traditions that would go on to define College life for every student who came after them. In filling those corridors and classrooms with energy, camaraderie and purpose, they helped give John Paul College its heart.
Their contribution has been widely recognised as shaping the ethos, culture and character of the institution during its most critical years. The values they embodied, of community, commitment, and pride in their College, became woven into the fabric of John Paul College in ways that have proven both lasting and far-reaching.
As the Class of 1986 graduated, the College farewelled not just a group of students, but the last living link to its very origins. The founding student era, which had begun with so much promise and potential in 1982, officially drew to a close.
Yet the legacy of these pioneering students endures. Future generations of John Paul College students would benefit from the culture and character this cohort helped to create, often without knowing the names of those responsible. The Foundation Students did not simply pass through the College; they made it what it is. Their story remains a permanent and honoured part of the College's history.
